Last night I went to Ilkley Playhouse to see a new version of Fredeich Schiller's Mary Stuart, by Mike Poulton. I must say it was a very professional performance, particularly the principal female leads portraying Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I.
However, I'm sorry to say, at first, I found it difficult to put aside my own understanding(prejudices?) about the historical events. Having spent over a year trawling through State papers and contemporary accounts I started to pick holes in the events as portrayed. Luckily, I soon came to my senses and settled down to enjoy the play. After all, as I told myself, hey, it's fiction! That's what you write.
The audience certainly enjoyed the play and gave the actors a wonderful round of applause at the end. And me? I applauded with the rest having learned a valuable lesson.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
